How to Use Mockups for Product Listings and Presentations
A mockup turns a flat design into a picture of a real product. Here is how designers and sellers use them, and how to keep them useful.
Product listing images
Show your design on the product in a clean, consistent style. Use the same angle and background across a listing, and add a few color versions if they exist.
Client presentations
A mockup helps a client see a design as a finished product. Show two or three options in the same mockup so they compare like with like.
Social media and ads
Use mockups for launch posts and previews. Export in the size the platform needs and keep the product centered, so nothing is cropped.
Testing before you print
Preview a design on the product before you order samples or a print run. It will not replace a physical sample, but it shows spacing and color problems early.
Portfolio
Designers use mockups to present logo, packaging and label work. Keep the strongest examples and show different products.
Keep it honest
- The mockup should look like the product you actually sell. A custom mockup built from your own photo does this best.
- Use real print colors where you can, and check the result against a physical sample.
- Do not use a mockup to show features the product does not have.
