How to Use Smart Objects in a PSD Mockup
A Smart Object is a special layer that stores your artwork inside the mockup. Because the original design is kept intact, you can swap it for a new one in seconds, and Photoshop re-applies the perspective, curves and lighting for you.
Replace the design in 5 steps
- Open the PSD in Photoshop with File > Open.
- Open the Layers panel (Window > Layers) and find the layer named something like “Your Design Here”. Smart Object layers show a small page icon in the corner of the thumbnail. If you cannot see it, expand the folders.
- Double-click the layer thumbnail. The Smart Object opens in a new tab. You can also right-click the layer and choose Replace Contents… to pick a file from your computer.
- Place or paste your artwork into that tab, resize it to fit the canvas, and hide or delete the placeholder.
- Press Ctrl+S (Windows) or Cmd+S (Mac), then close the tab. Go back to the mockup tab and your design is in place.
Use Save, not Save As. Save As creates a separate file, and the mockup will not update.
Why mockups use Smart Objects
- Non-destructive. Photoshop keeps your original artwork, so scaling and warping do not degrade it.
- Reusable. One PSD works for any number of designs. You only change what is inside the Smart Object.
- Effects stay in place. Shadows, highlights and texture sit on separate layers above the Smart Object, usually with blend modes such as Multiply or Overlay, so every new design looks like it is printed on the product.
Tips for sharp, accurate results
- Use artwork at least as large as the Smart Object canvas. You can check the size inside the Smart Object tab with Image > Canvas Size.
- Work in RGB color mode for screen previews.
- Keep important text and logos away from the edges, where curves or folds may crop them.
- For logos, use a vector file or a transparent PNG so the edges stay clean.
- Leave the shadow and highlight layers alone. If an effect looks too strong, lower that layer's opacity instead of deleting it.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Double-click does nothing useful | You are on a normal layer. Select the layer with the Smart Object icon, and check inside folders. |
| The design does not update | Press Save (not Save As) inside the Smart Object tab, then close it. |
| The artwork looks blurry | The source is too small. Use a larger, higher-resolution file. |
| Colors look different | Check that the document is in RGB with an sRGB profile. Some mockups also include color adjustment layers on purpose. |
| Photoshop feels slow | Large Smart Objects use a lot of memory. Close other apps, or raise the memory limit in Edit > Preferences > Performance. |
How my custom mockups are built
Every mockup I make is set up the same way: one clearly named Smart Object for your artwork, with shadows, highlights and texture on separate layers above it. That means you can follow the steps above on day one. If you also want to know how to open and export the file, read the guide to using a PSD mockup file.
