What Is a PSD Mockup?
A PSD mockup is a layered Photoshop file that shows your design on a realistic product, such as a box, bottle, pouch or T-shirt, without needing a photoshoot or a printed sample.
What is inside a PSD mockup
- The product. A photo or render of the item you want to show.
- A Smart Object. The layer where your design goes. It keeps the perspective and shape of the product.
- Shadows and highlights. Separate layers on top that make your design look printed on the product.
- Color and background layers. Layers you can change to show other colors or scenes.
How it works
You open the PSD in Photoshop, double-click the Smart Object, drop in your design and save. Photoshop applies the product’s shape and lighting automatically. The Smart Object guide shows every step.
Why designers and sellers use them
- See how a design looks before you pay for printing or samples.
- Show clients a realistic preview instead of a flat file.
- Create product images for stores, social media and portfolios.
- Test the same design in several colors quickly.
PSD mockups and other formats
Mockups also come as Figma files, 3D scenes or online browser tools. PSD is the most common choice for product photos because Photoshop handles perspective, blend modes and Smart Objects well.
What makes a good PSD mockup
- Clearly named layers, so you know what to edit.
- A Smart Object that is large enough for sharp artwork.
- Realistic shadows and highlights that match the product.
- A look that still works when you change the design or color.
Generic templates or a custom mockup?
Generic templates are quick, but they show someone else’s product. A custom mockup is built from yours. Read custom vs online mockups to choose.
