How to Photograph Your Product for a Mockup
A custom mockup is only as good as the photo it is built from. A clear, well-lit picture gives the designer real shadows, edges and textures to work with.
Lighting
- Use soft, even light, such as a window with daylight. Put the product beside the window, not in direct sun.
- Avoid hard flash. It creates bright hot spots that are difficult to edit.
- Avoid a mix of warm bulbs and daylight, which can tint the colors.
Angle and framing
- Shoot the view you want in your mockup. If you need the front of a box, photograph the front.
- Keep the camera level and at the product’s height, and keep it still.
- Show the whole product with some space around it. Do not crop the edges.
Background
Use a plain, light surface such as a table or paper sheet. Avoid patterns and clutter. A simple background makes it easier to separate the product from the scene.
Quality
- Use the highest quality setting of your phone or camera. Aim for a long side of at least 2,000 pixels.
- Clean the product first. Dust, fingerprints and creases show up in close-ups.
- Do not add filters or heavy edits.
- Send the original file, not a screenshot.
WhatsApp can shrink photos when you send them as images. Send the photo as a document or by email to keep the full quality.
What if I do not have a photo?
Send what you have and describe what you need. If the photo is not suitable, you will be told what to change before work starts. Details are on the contact page.
