How to Change Colors in a PSD Mockup
A good mockup lets you show the same product in many colors without losing its shadows and texture. There are three common ways to do it in Photoshop.
Method 1: Solid Color layer
Many mockups already have a color layer. Find a layer named “Color”, “Product Color” or “Background”. If it shows a color fill icon, double-click its thumbnail, pick a new color and click OK. This is the fastest method.
Method 2: Hue/Saturation
- Select the product layer.
- Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation.
- Clip it to the product: hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click between the two layers, or press Ctrl+Alt+G (Cmd+Option+G).
- Move the Hue slider to change the color. Use Saturation and Lightness to fine-tune.
This works best on products with one strong color.
Method 3: A Color blend layer
- Create a new empty layer above the product and clip it to the product.
- Paint or fill it with your color.
- Set the blend mode to Color. Use Multiply if you want a darker, richer result.
The product’s shadows and texture show through, so it still looks real.
White and black products
Pure white and pure black hold very little color information, so Hue/Saturation does little. For white products, use a clipped color layer set to Multiply. For black products, lift the shadows first with a Curves or Levels adjustment, then add color.
Tips
- Note the hex code of each color so you can match your brand exactly.
- Use Window > Layer Comps to save each color version, then switch between them or export all.
- Keep the document in RGB with an sRGB profile for screen use.
Replace the design too
Once the color is right, add your artwork with the Smart Object steps.
