How to Use a PSD Mockup in Photopea
Photopea is a web-based editor that runs in your browser and opens PSD files. If you do not have Photoshop installed, it is an accessible way to use a PSD mockup.
Use a mockup in Photopea
- Open photopea.com in your browser.
- Choose File > Open and select the PSD, or drag it onto the page.
- Find the Smart Object layer in the Layers panel on the right.
- Double-click its thumbnail. The contents open in a new tab.
- Drag your design into that tab, resize it to fit and delete the placeholder.
- Press Ctrl+S to apply the change, then close the tab.
- Go to File > Export as and choose PNG or JPG.
What to know before you start
- Complex effects can look different. Some blend modes and layer styles render slightly differently than in Photoshop. Compare the result with the preview image.
- Big files can be slow. Very large PSDs depend on your computer’s memory and browser.
- Keep the original. Save your work as a new PSD from the File menu so the master stays clean.
- The free version shows ads.
When Photoshop is still better
If colors must be exact, or the mockup uses advanced effects, use Photoshop for the final export. For simple jobs, such as showing a logo on a box, Photopea is usually enough.
More help
The layers work the same way in both programs. The PSD file guide explains layers, colors and export.
